Pareidolia is a type of illusion or misperception involving a vague or obscure stimulus being perceived as something clear and distinct. Pareidolia is the result of the human mind’s tendency to pick recognizable imagery out of chaotic forms.

[edit] Pareidolia in an Islamic Context

Islamic websites and newspapers in Islamic countries frequently use clear examples of pareidolia as 'proofs' of Allah's existence or the veracity of Islam. These claims are no more true than, for example, people seeing Ronald Reagan's face in a tortilla or the virgin Mary in the clouds. It's a figment of the imagination, an illusion; nothing more, nothing less.
