Saifullah (سيف الله) literally means "Sword of Allah" from the Arabic سيف (sayf) "sword" combined with الله "Allah".[1] It is also a title originally given by Prophet Muhammad to one of his companions, Khalid ibin al-Walid,[2] the most celebrated and loved warrior in Islamic history.
In June 2007, The Ulema Council of Pakistan (the biggest of its kind in the country with 2,000 scholars)[3] awarded the title 'Saifullah', their highest honor, to Shaykh Osama bin Laden,[4] calling him a "Muslim warrior".[5] Leaders of Islamic terrorist organizations in the Caucasus in Russia are also popularly known as Saifullah, for example Anzor Astemirov and Muslim Atayev.[6][7]
